The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it will use every available means to repel moves by President Akufo-Addo to alter the historical records of the country.
According to General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, it is an established fact that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah fought for the Independence of Ghana and not the President’s father, Edward Akufo-Addo or his grandfather, J.B Danquah as “he wants all of us to believe”.
President Akufo-Addo has come under a barrage of attacks after he revealed plans to present a legislation before Parliament to set aside August 4 as a day to celebrate Ghana's founders, including 'The Big Six', ditching September 21, the original date.
The Big Six were six leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the leading political party in the British colony of the Gold Coast. They were detained by the colonial authorities in 1948 following disturbances leading to the killing of three World War II veterans. They are pictured on the front of the Ghana cedi notes.
Ebenezer Ako-Adjei – founding member of the UGCC; Edward Akufo-Addo – founding member of the UGCC and subsequently Chief Justice of Ghana and president of Ghana and Joseph Boakye Danquah – founding member of the UGCC. The rest are Kwame Nkrumah – Prime Minister of Ghana and first president of Ghana; Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey – founding member of the UGCC and William Ofori Atta – founding member of the UGCC.
The President prefers September 21, which is the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, be observed with a holiday in his memory.
The Conventions People’s Party (CPP) founded by Dr. Nkrumah, has kicked against the move describing the proposals as lame.
Speaking on Adom FM Tuesday, September 19, 2017, Johnson Asiedu Nketia known in political circles as ‘General Mosquito’ described the proposals as “a waste of time”.
He said the NDC, which believes in the ideals and principles of Dr. Nkrumah, will vehemently resist any attempt by President Akufo-Addo to change Ghana’s history suggesting, the government should hold a funeral in honour of his ancestry. “We won’t allow Akufo-Addo to change our history so he should organised a funeral to honour his ancestry in his hometown”.
Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) say they will be embarking on a solidarity march on Thursday, September 21, 2017, “to commemorate the Founder’s Day Celebration and the birthday of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the Founder and first President of the Republic of Ghana”.

Togoland Congress Party.
And after behaving like this they expect the youth of this country to take them serious. At least we have read from our history books and know VERY WELL that Dr. Nkrumah was not the ONLY person who played the role that brought us independence. So where from this deliberate attempt by the NDC and their CPP surrogates to change what is CLEARLY WRITTEN in our history books. These are the things politicians do that make people not to take them serious anymore leading to the collapse of the parties. Dr. Nkrumah started this gimmicks by creating a special propaganda office for the CPP during the hey days of CPP. Now we all see the results reflecting in the current state of the CPP. The NDC is also chatting the same course thinking they can deceive all of us as if all of us have no brains except them. So annoying!!!
WHAT DID NKRUMAH DO SO SPECIAL TO FOUND GHANA,BEING THE FIRST PRESIDENT DOES NOT MAKE ONE A FOUNDER,NIGERIA,TOGO,IVORY COAST,MALE ETC HAVE NO FOUNDERS,BEFORE NKRUMAH WAS BORN GHANA EXISTED WITH THE NAME GOLD COAST,IT WAS THE BRITISH WHO BROUGH ALL THE ETHNIC GROUPS TOGETHER TO FORM GHANA.HKRUMAH COULD BE THE GREATEST MAN EHO EVER LIVED ON EARTH,BUT HR WAS NOT THE ONLY FOUNDER OF GHANA
I don't know which history of Ghana Asiedu Nketiah is claiming the NDC will ensure stays. Ghanaians should put this crazy partisanship lies to rest once and for all. Ghanaians who have lived over 60 years must tell these ruffians the truth about the independence struggle. Fortunately, not all of us past 60 years want to shelve the truth, which according to Asiedu Nketiah and others, are lies. It's very unfortunate, period! CPP and its leaders were not the only founders of Ghana. I have lived 69 years and I remember how my uncle's old-time drinking bar cum concert hall in Akim Oda was used as a meeting place for all political groups when I was about 7 or 8 years old; and I can vividly recall the faces and names of many late Ghanaian politicians, my most favorite being Mr. Botsio and Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey, because they always dashed me money for being around. They belonged to different parties, but they all threw in their time, resources, and energies to win independence for this country. So why do some people want to sideline others who fought for Ghana's independence? Is it because of politics at its worst? People don't know about the Preventive Detention Act and the day J.B. Daquah died? They don't know about how Nsawam maximum security prisons came to be, and the lives and families that were destroyed in the 1960s - and I don't blame them because nobodies like Asiedu Nketiah think they have the authority to rewrite Ghana's history. The NDC should let the youth know how even chiefs or kings such Sir Nana Ofori Atta 1 and others had been involved in the movement for self-government. By the way, why did the BIG SIX go to prison in the first place? Were they in prison for stealing? Was it not because they were taking part in the struggle for independence? Which group of people paid their way to London to protect African lands that later on became part of modern-day Ghana? How did Dr. Nkrumah become involved in the struggle for independence, and why was he brought down from overseas? Teach our children how Ghana became the first British colony in sub-Sahara Africa to become independence and stop all the lies.
Mr president please don't bother to be liked by all just do what u think is good in the eyes of God. For God sake u are the leader of this country u can choose to introduce any holiday u like is within ur power.
As for ndc,Satan get confused and shocked at their behaviors.they do things he can not do !!!
Are the NDC telling Ghanaians that there is nothing like 'THE BIG SIX' in our history books? Are they rewriting our history? Will they tell their children in the JHS that, in their social studies lessons, when their teacher asks them to name the BIG SIX, they should correct the teacher that; we do not have anything like this in our history books. so we have 'BIG ONE' ie only Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Where from this hatred? What is the crime of Nana Addo for being a son of a former leader in Ghana? Are the NDC telling Ghanaians that it is a crime for a son or a child of a former head of state to rule the country? Who brought the founder's day issue to Ghana? We all learnt from our Government lessons on pre- independence struggle in Ghana. it started with the ARPS- THE ABORIGINES RIGHT PROTECTION SOCIETY, Headed by John Mensah Sarbah,Jacob Wilson Sey etc. WASU, WEST AFRICAN STUDENTS UNION, with the African students in Diaspora and some notable persons were Caseley Hayford, even Azikewe of Nigeria were part of the Nationalist Agitations at the time.Later came the formation of NCBWA ie NATIONAL CONGRESS FOR BRITISH WEST AFRICA.Later came the formation of UGCC and later Dr Nkrumah broke away to form the CPP.All these were things we learned in our Government and social studies lessons in school. so do they want our studentS to believe that there was no struggle which led to independence? we should stop the hatred against our political opponents and tell the truth to the youth and the younger ones. all what am writing was what i was taught in school. so if all these information are false then, there shouldn't be any course like government or social studies or political science in our schools. period!
Founder or Founders had never been an issue for this country until the advent of the Atta Mills presidency of the NDC. They needed a heritage of some sort and were not too comfortable with that of their antecedent Rawlings NDC presidency even though he was constitutionally their Founder. They desperately grabbed the Nkrumah legacy and with it the Nkrumah loyalists like Kwesi Pratt and co. Then they created this controversial FOUNDER'S day on the birthday of Nkrumah. At least those of us in our 60 plus who saw a bit of the Nkrumah days do know FOR A FACT that Ghana was NOT FOUNDED BY NKRUMAH. PERIOD. Let's correct this ndc distortion NOW!!!!!!!
we call this people leaders no good advise will come from this man ASIEDU NKETIA on the face of propaganda
The most intriguing part of this whole debate is that the NPP is willing to INCLUDE Nkrumah, but the NDC is bent on EXCLUDING the other members of the BIG SIX! It is very very intriguing. We must know those who seek the collective interest of ALL of GHANA and those who thrive on DIVIDE-and-RULE Tactics! The NDC is a BIG S.H.A.M.E
