Friends of the embattled Ghanaian businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome, have launched their version of the online fund-raising craze, �The Ice Bucket Challenge,� to help him raise money to repay the GHC 51.2 million owed the state. Like the original campaign started by the charity organisation, ALS Association, to help raise funds for the research of Motor Neurone Disease, a rare disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord, eventually causing the inability to move voluntarily, the �Woyome Ice Bucket Challenge� is for a similarly �good cause.� The campaign will attempt to raise the total sum of GHC 51,283,480.59 to repay monies unlawfully paid to Mr. Woyome by the state in a judgment debt scandal, which rocked the country between 2009 and 2010. The challenge involves individuals tipping a bucket of iced water over their heads while being filmed. Once the challenge has been completed, the individual nominates others to do same. The nominees then have 24 hours to also drench themselves in ice-cold water. Unlike the original campaign, the �Woyome Ice Bucket Challenge,� requires anyone nominated to donate a minimum of GHC 500,000 before embarking on the challenge. Any nominee who fails to conduct the challenge will be forced to donate an amount of GHC 1,000,000. Mr. Woyome who reportedly took the challenge earlier this morning has nominated his close friend and brother, Mr. Martin Amidu to take the challenge. The embattled businessman also nominated president John Mahama, Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu and Mr. Ebo Barton Oduro, describing them as �close associates.� Organisers of the �Woyome Ice Bucket Challenge� are also appealing to the general public to join this �good cause� aimed at raising funds to help one of Ghana�s most honourable citizens.
