NDC Congress: Voting Underway

Voting is underway at the NDC National Delegates Congress in Kumasi. The over 3,600 delegates are expected to choose 24 new leaders from a list of 70 prospects,, from Chairman to Deputy Communication Officer. Many incumbents are under fire and fighting for their electoral lives. Perhaps most under fire is National Organiser Yaw Boateng Gyan, who is facing a stiff challenge from Kofi Adams. Many have tipped the Deputy General Secretary to kick out Mr Gyan. Also battling for his life is National Chairman Kwabena Adjei, who has the arduous task of convincing delegates that he is better than the three other men seeking to grab his seat. But Dr Adjei aka Chief Cat Hunter I, is being hotly challenged by the National Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Porturphy; former General Secretary, Alhaji Huudu Yahya as well as former Ambassador to Malaysia, Daniel Abodakpi. Six out of 15 candidates will be selected to serve as vice chairs for the NDC and these include outgoing Womens Organiser, Jemima Anita Desoso; former Attorney General, Betty Mould-Iddrisu, former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; as well as former Education Minister, Lee Ocran. Incumbents Danny Anang and Said Sinare are also competing. General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia is expected to easily see off the challenge of Ahmad Farrakhan. The NDC has already elected the National Women and Youth Organisers, although the position of deputy Youth Organiser is still contentious. Other positions to be contested for are Treasurer, Deputy General Secretary (2), Deputy Organiser (2), Propaganda Secretary, and Deputy Propaganda Secretary (2). The new leaders would be expected to organize primaries for the presidential and parliamentary elections for the NDC ahead of the 2016 general elections.
