No Female NPP MP Is Afraid Of A Contest; We Became MPs Through Competition - Adwoa Safo

Member of the Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Hon Adwoa Safo has pleaded with her party [NPP] National Executive Committee (NEC) and the aggrieved party members over the affirmative action to resolve the misunderstanding behind closed doors.

According to her, the motive for the affirmative action is a good one as it intends to help women to play a frontline role in politics but pleaded with the NEC to take a look again at the petition raised by the majority of the party members who are not comfortable with the decision.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Hon. Adwoa Safo implored the National Council, the party leaders and the NEC to reach an understanding with the people who consider the approach and the timing of the affirmative action wrong.

She however urged the concerned NPP members to possibly consider another approach to empower women in politics; reminding the leadership of her party that from the polling stations to the top, everybody has a say in NPP because they are the foundation and pillars of the party.

From the polling station agents to the top, everybody has a say in the party because they are our foundation and pillar as a party. The majority decisions are from the polling stations because they hold the party and so if they say they don’t understand the proposal, we have to understand them and sit down with them over the issue…..I believe the National Council and the leaders of NPP are listening….sit down with those who don’t understand the affirmative action to see if it will help the party at this time or not”, she pleaded.

She feared that if the issue is left unresolved, its consequences will so grievous that it will affect the fortunes of the Presidential Candidate and those who will contest for the Parliamentary seats in next year's general polls.

She further advised the aggrieved members to exercise patience so as not to play into the hands of its main political rival; pleading again that “we must speak internally without coming out in the public with such issue and find the best way to stop any future consequences which will affect the party in 2016 elections”.

It can never be that any of the incumbent female MP is afraid of competition which is why that decision was made to protect them. All the 16 women MPs came to power through competition….for the records I am not a member of the NEC. If you make a decision and majority of the people oppose the decision, you have to think twice about it”, she stated.
