The winner of the 2015 KAAF University College pageant, Miss KAAF 2015, Ms. Lawrenda Adgah, is set to embark on a project aimed at improving the welfare of street children.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, she said the project would begin from Vakpo, her hometown, in the Volta Region where a number of children were left on the street and some were denied the right to education.
The initiative is an advocacy programme christened: “Support the rural and street children in the country” under which children in need in elected communities in the area would be assisted to get access to quality education.
Ms. Adgah stated that children targeted to benefit from the programme were those aged eight to 16. The idea, she said, was to advocate the removal of children from the streets and catered for them.
She, therefore, advised parents against abusing their children, stressing that parents had every right to discipline their children but they should ensure that any such disciplinary action taken against their children would not cause any harm to them physically or emotionally.

A human rights Lawyer and gender advocate, Ms. Mary Ohenewaa Affual, who is supporting the initiative, said there would be a house-to-house advocacy programme to draw public attention to challenges confronting street children.
She said the street children phenomenon had been identified as one of the indicators of poverty, adding that there were other social reasons for which children were found on the street.
Again, she noted that children were the future of every nation and expressed wonder as to how children who had no access to education, good health and the comfort of home could become the country’s future leaders.
