Adam Mahamas Murder: Such Incidents Alien To NPP Council of Elders

The Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the attack on the Upper East regional chairman of the party, Adam Mahama that resulted in his demise on Thursday.

The Council stated that such acts of violence were foreign to the party’s tradition and expressed its disdain for the “gruesome act of criminality and cruelty.”

In a statement issued on Saturday, signed by its Chairman, C.K. Tedam, the Council said: “The loss of Mr. Adam Mahama is a kind of gruesome incident that has never been known in the NPP tradition and the Council condemns this act of unbelievable cruelty and criminality without reservation.”

The Council also directed the party’s members to desist from making comments in the media, which might interfere with the investigations of the Police and provoke actions, which might compromise the peace in the country.

It called on all party officials, members and the general public to assist the Police in their investigation to ensure the “dispensation of justice.”

“The Council considers it the duty of all Party officials and members as well as the general public to lend full cooperation and support to law enforcement agencies in the search for the criminals responsible and for the dispensation of justice,” the statement said.

Adam Mahama’s death should unify NPP

The council has asked members of the NPP to use the death of Adam Mahama as a way of unifying the party ahead of the elections in 2016.

According to them, the deceased NPP Chairman was an inspiration to numerous youth who believed the NPP to be the “avenue to genuinely serve their country.”

The Council therefore advised the party to “use the death of this wonderful countryman as the NPP’s obelisk of unity and peace and the staff for the march towards victory in the 2016 election.”

Background

The Upper East Chairman of the NPP was attacked with acid on Wednesday and subsequently passed away from his injuries the next day.

The Police are still investigating the attack but the incident is reported to have been politically motivated.

Days before the attack, youth in the region had allegedly on the orders of Adam Mahama, disrupted a planned meeting between the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and some regional executives of the party.

Mahama denied the allegations him although he subsequently apologized for the disturbances.

One person has been arrested in connection with the attack and he is reported to be the younger brother of Paul Afoko.

However, the family of the National Chairman has however, has come out to defend Gregory Afoko, claiming that he was asleep at the time of the attack.

They remain convinced that the real culprit will be found and Gregory’s name cleared.
