Late Mahama's Family: We'll Ensure Nana Addo Becomes Prez...But Flush Out "Opportunists" In NPP

Family of the late Upper East Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Adams Mahama, has called on the opposition party to root out divisive elements they describe as opportunists working to destroy the party.

The family believes though the party needs unity to wrestle power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), perpetratos of the horrendous attack on their kinsman must be flushed out of the party, pointing out that rooting out these "opportunists" is a first step towards building a more cohesive, united NPP.

We need unity and those who are there trying to disorganize us; we should get them out. We should get them out immediately. We do not need them because they want to destroy our party...They know where they are coming from and they are opportunists. They should go back there and they should not destroy our party,” Rockson Bukari, Spokesperson for the family said after the burial of Mr. Mahama.

Adams Mahama died after being doused with acid by two assailants Wednesday. He was confirmed dead Thursday morning at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

Only last week, there was a violent confrontation in the region which resulted in the scuttling of a planned meeting between the NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko, General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong and other regional executives of the party. The two later sought refuge at the regional police and subsequently lodged an assault complaint with the Upper East police.

The deceased had indicated he was not notified of the said meeting but the two (Afoko and Agyapong), claimed that Adams Mahama was well aware of the meeting resulting in some youth in the region giving them a hot chase. The incident was still being investigated when Wednesday's tragic event occurred.

The party has since been unstable but various influential persons in the party including it’s flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, have called for calm. Though motive for the murder is yet to be ascertained, many have pointed accusing fingers at some prominent leaders in the NPP.

Delivering a passionate speech after Mahama Adams' burial, Rockson Bukari reaffirmed the commitment of the late Mahama’s family to continue the fight to win power for the NPP in the 2016 general elections

The battle that Mahama started; we will continue to fight and I would like to assure you that the family and the NPP in the Upper East Region will continue from where Adam left and continue to make sure that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo come 2016 will become the President of Ghana,” he said.
