The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has given assurance that security situation in Tamale is under firm control and that the people there are safe.

    He said all was calm in the metropolis and the entire Northern Region after recent nasty clashes between the police and the military.

    The two institutions had agreed to hold regular joint durbars and other activities to enhance interactions and co-operation between them.

     Mr. Dery said this in a joint statement with the Defence Minister, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, to Parliament.

     “Currently full operational co-operation and collaboration have been restored in Tamale and the entire Northern Region and the general public is reassured that there is full impetus towards their security and safety.”

     The appearance of the pair in the House followed a directive by the Speaker, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, last week, to brief the lawmaking body on Tuesday, on the clash after the Minority Leader, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, had raised the matter on the floor.

     They were summoned to brief the House on the circumstances leading to the bloody clash and measures being taken to avoid similar occurrences.

      The two Ministers expressed regret about the incident and said the two institutions had agreed to fully implement existing guidelines regarding the handling of personnel on disciplinary issues and breaches of the law.

      Mr. Dery added that “the adherence to this will forestall such unfortunate incidents.”

      A five-member committee had been set up to conduct detailed investigations in to the causes of the clash and recommend further interventions beyond existing guidelines protocols.

      The two Ministers, on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commended the hierarchy of the nation’s security management for the leadership and professionalism.

      Mr. Iddrisu confirmed that there was for now peace between the military and police personnel in Tamale.
