Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP Advocates Passage of Legislation To Guide CSR Activities

The Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri constituency Hon Frank Annoh-Dompreh has suggested the passage of a law to guide Corporate Social Responsibility activities of corporate bodies in the country to make such activities conform to the path of the country's development.

Hon Annoh-Dompreh made the suggestion in Parliament in a statement titled "Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) : the need for legislation."

Whilst commending Corporate bodies for their charitable activities, Hon Annoh-Dompreh said CSR of organizations and companies must be supervised to make communities or the people derive maximum benefits from such charitable support.

"All industry players of the economy are contributing their quota towards development as part of their operational ethics, however most of the projects executed through CSR are either abandoned by the beneficiaries or had become faulty," Hon Frank Annoh-Dompreh noted.

Whilst lauding the efforts of corporate bodies to help improve the lives of people through CSR initiatives, the Nsawam/Adoagyiri legislator emphasised the need to synchronise CSR activities under one body.

"However, this does not mean that government should determine or dictate what, where, when or how much organizations should invest into their CSR initiatives," Hon Annoh- Dompreh stated.

Making his contribution to the statement, the Minority Leader Hon Haruna Iddrisu noted that CSR activities are benefitting the people a lot but such activities should always be carried out based on the real needs of the people or communities in which the Corporate bodies operate.

Other MPs who commented on the statement commended the corporate bodies for their kind gesture to people through CSR and called for supervision of those activities through legislation.

The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Prof Michael Aaron Oquaye subsequently referred the matter to the Committee on Social Welfare of Parliament and asked the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon Joseph Osei Owusu and Hon Frank Annoh-Dompreh who made the statement to come out with a framework on CSR and submit a report to the house.
