PPAG calls For Help As Teenage Pregnancies Remain High

The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) has set up an initiative to help raise funds in support of its campaigns.

The African Citizens Initiative (ACI) on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is an innovation which aims at using volunteers of PPAG to solicit for funds from friends, groups, institutions and so on.

Speaking to Peacefmonline.com after the launch of the initiative, Madam Abena Adubeah Acheampong, the Executive Director of PPAG said they can no longer rely only on donor partners as resources from them is gradually going down. As a result the association devised other means of raising funds (ACI) to continue operating efficiently.

"Resources from our donor partners are dwindling and so we needed to look at other innovative ways of raising funds in order to be able to still give out the information and the services and the programmes we give to our beneficiaries especially the youth. The need for sexual and reproductive health education and services is as important as in 1967 when PPAG was set up"

According to her, "you will notice that there is an upsurge of teenage pregnancy; quite recently the HIV statistics that were released by the Ghana AIDS Commission indicated that the infection rate for young people between the ages of 9 and 19 is increasing…we need to make sure that they understand the issues and are able to prevent themselves from getting infected with STI’s or getting themselves pregnant…It is in this vane that we have set up the African citizen initiative to be able to get our volunteers to go out and be able to solicit from their friends, institutions and groups to be able to support the programmes that we run"

Madam Adubeah Acheampong further called on all to help in keeping the association running.
