Drivers Grow Wild Over Mounting Of Toll Booths

The Madina branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Madina Municipal Assembly's decision to mount toll booths in the area has sparked wild anger on the part of drivers.

Confusion broke out Tuesday morning between drivers, officials of the Madina Municipal assembly, and the private owner of the biggest bus terminal at Madina over plans to mount toll booths.

Drivers who operate under the Madina GPRTU, staged the protest against plans to erect some four toll booths.

They argued that the Assembly and the GRPTU are extorting huge sums of money from them under the guise of collecting tolls.

The drivers have also vowed not to pay the tolls because of the deplorable nature of the roads.

They also accused the Welfare Chairman of the GPRTU, Mr. Boamah of negligence and dereliction of duty.

Some of the drivers who spoke to Citi News said the decision by the GPRTU is not favourable.

“We met with the assembly and expressed our sentiments. We asked them to reduce the time frame for the collection of the tolls. That was accepted, but our members are agitating because the tolls were being collected from 4:00am and 11:00pm.”

“The authorities are cheating us by charging us more. We insist on paying only Ghc6.00”, another driver said.

Some said, “the time-frame for the collection of the toll is too long. We will protest against it.”
