The Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko has disclosed that there is still more work to do in ensuring that total calm and peace is restored at Chereponi where violence has left many displaced and houses torched.

He says though there is calm in the area now, they still need to work harder to ensure that the expected peace is provided and activities brought to normalcy.

Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he added that currently with the support from the police headquarters in Accra, enough personnel and resource have been deployed to Chereponi to ensure that there is relative peace in the area.

"We were able to retrieve some locally manufactured guns and also arrested some 22 people who were involved in the violent clashes.

"Let me also appeal to the local people to assist the police and security agencies in brokering peace between the two factions. They cannot continue to engage and live in violence," he said.

"Currently, the properties that have been destroyed within the short pace of time cannot be quantified. So we are urging the chiefs and people of the area to help ensure that this matter is brought to a rest," he added.

He also pleaded with government to implement the findings of a committee that was chaired by the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong when similar violence between these groups broke up.

The government set up a five-member fact-finding committee to delve into the circumstances that led to the recent outbreak of communal violence between the Chokosis and the Konkombas in the Chereponi and the Saboba districts in the Northern Region in January.

The committee, which was tasked to find out the remote and immediate causes of the conflict and come up with solutions to ensure lasting peace in the conflict area, is chaired by a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong.

The renewed clashes between the Konkombas and Chokosis resulted in the burning down of several houses and properties in Nandoni, a farming community in the district.

The Chokosis and the Konkombas have been fighting over the ownership right of a parcel of land.
