Stop Criminalising Nigerians And Other African Nationals - Economic Fighters League Caution

Leader of a movement called Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yeboah says there is an on-going worrying trend in the Ghanaian media with regards to how the discussions surrounding the kidnappings have been left at the doorstep of Nigerians.

He said, Nigerians in Ghana are not foreigners hence the need for critics commenting on the matter, not to discuss them along that line as it was unfair.

He has also asked the media to blacklist any politician or individuals who would tag Nigerians and blame them for these crimes because “crime is crime and every society has criminals”.

He admonished the government to stay focus by beefing up the country’s security system and also resource the national security operatives with the needed technology to fight crime.

He however slammed the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for creating the impression that foreigners are the ones committing the recent crimes.

"Every African living in Ghana is not a foreigner. From where we sit at the Economic Fighters League, every African living in Ghana is not a foreigner. We believe in the unity and liberation of all Africans . . . When we create the impression that a certain group of people are the ones committing these crimes then I don’t think we are being fair to ourselves. Crime is a crime and every society has criminals. Ghana is not an island, and we cannot  also pretend as if we are a holy society and claim that foreigners have invaded our country causing these crimes. What we need is to train our security personnel. We need a beef-up in our security set up. Blaming Nigerians or Togolese would not solve the problem,” he explained.

Eight persons have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of the two Canadian women at Ahodwo in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects include five Ghanaians and three Nigerians.

They were arrested on Wednesday morning after an operation which freed the two women who were kidnapped last week Tuesday.

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, made this known at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday afternoon.
