As part of the efforts to heed to the calls from the Chairman of the Lepers Aid Committee, Rev Father Andrew Campbell, for individuals and organizations to come to the aid of the Weija Leprosarium in Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra, a businessman has donated clothes and other assorted items to the Leprosarium.
The home, according to Rev Campbell, faces inadequate infrastructure, lack of social amenities, inadequate funding and families of the inmates deserting them over the years since the families consider the cured lepers unclean.
The businessman, Eric Ansong, popularly known as “Japan Borgar”, donated the assorted items to the Leprosarium as part of his 50th birthday celebrations.
This was the seventh year in a role that the Japan Borgar has donated such items to the Leprosarium.
The items, worth about GH¢10,000, include bags of sachet water, toilet roll, cartons of bottled water, cooking oil, cartons of milo, cartons of milk, assorted drinks and cartons of canned fish.
The rest were boxes of biscuits, bags of rice, cartons of soap and 40-pieces of clothes.
Mr. Ansong, who deals in building materials at Kantamanto in Accra said the inmates of the leprosarium are human, just as any other individual in the country, and need to be treated as such and cared for.
He explained that it is no fault of theirs that they had the condition and urged other businessmen and women in the country to contribute their quota to the home.
A Health Care Assistant, Madam Victoria Seka, who received the items on behalf of the home said stigmatization was their main problem facing the inmates and urged the general public to show love to the people in the Leprosarium.
Madam Seka expressed gratitude to Mr Ansong for the support being given to the less privileged in the society.
