This year, under the theme “One World Through Cooperative Finance,” International Credit Union (ICU) Day will once again spotlight the critical role that credit unions play in empowering communities and promoting inclusive financial services across the globe.
Ghana will celebrate the ICU Day on October 19, 2024 at the University of Cape Coast NEC, Hall.
ICU Day has been celebrated annually since October 1948. It serves as an opportunity for credit unions across the globe to reflect on their history, recognize the importance of financial cooperatives, and share their successes in serving members. Over the years, the celebration has grown, with various activities aimed at spreading awareness of the cooperative difference.
This year's theme highlights how credit unions work together to break down barriers to financial access, providing millions of people around the world with affordable and sustainable financial services.
From rural farmers to small business owners, students, and families, credit unions have continued to empower individuals to achieve their financial goals while fostering economic development in their communities.
In Ghana, the Ghana Co-operative Credit Unions Association (CUA) Ltd has played a significant role in expanding the cooperative financial model. With over 495 credit unions serving more than 1.7 million members, CUA has enabled its members to collectively save, access affordable loans, and build a more secure financial future. This a testament to the strength of the cooperative model.
As ICU Day is observed this year, it is imperative to appreciate how credit unions have been the backbone of financial inclusion, resilience, and community-building. Through unity, trust, and a shared vision, credit unions continue to create a brighter future for people across the globe, reinforcing the message that indeed, we are one world through cooperative finance.
Special Guests for the ICU Day 2024 is Honorable Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Minister for Employment and Labour Relations. Speakers, include Hon. Justina Marigold Assan, Central Regional Minister and Osaberema Dr. Kwesi Attah III, Oguaa Manhene.
Their collective expertise and leadership will enrich the discussions on how credit unions can continue to foster development and improve lives through inclusive financial services.
