The Russian ambassador to Ghana, Vladmir Barbin, has hailed his hosts as one of the best places to do business in Africa, and the country is one of the destinations they are considering to do business.
Barbin has sought to clear the air about the absence of major Russian business in Ghana. Apart from the presence of Russias second major oil producer, LUKOIL, no key Russian business is operating in the country.
In the latest Wikileaks report, the American government had questioned the absence of Russian business in Ghana, while there are a number of Russian companies in other countries.
However, the Russian envoy told Citi Business News that although it has been their wish to have Russian businesses present in Ghana, he explained that we were very much occupied with our internal affairs.
"We have had very difficult periods in the history of our country. The Soviet Union collapsed and new countries emerged, so the main focus was on the internal problems, Barbin said.
The ambassador, however, added that Russia is looking to extend its economic activities abroad. Ghana is one of the best solutions in Africa. It is a democratic, stable country and the market is predictable. These are good conditions for future investments.
