Massive job losses will soon hit the Building and Civil Engineering sectors if the cedi is not rescued from its continuous free-fall against the dollar.
According to the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG), the continuous depreciation of the cedi against the dollar will force contractors out of business soon.
The cedi for some time now has been depreciating against the dollar, despite moves by the Bank of Ghana to arrest the situation.
At the close of business on Monday, the cedi was trading against the dollar at 1 cedi 95 pesewas and it appears the issue is having a negative toll on the building industry.
We need the intervention of government to arrest the situation of the decline of the cedis and also to promote the production of the local construction industry in Ghana otherwise we are going to lose our business and people will ran out of jobs, Rockson Dogbegah, the Technical Committee Chairman of the ABCECG told Citi Business News.
He further urged government must address the situation as soon as possible to contain the issue.
