FREDA PREMPEH, Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region, is demanding the immediate resignation of Finance Minister, Seth Terkper for diverting statutory funds meant for MPs.
Speaking with Daily Guide in Sunyani over the weekend, Freda Prempeh expressed her disgust about the attitude of the Finance Minister and the Mahama administration for their attempt to cripple the work of MPs by starving them of their mandatory funds to undertake development projects in their constituencies.
According to the Tano North MP, apart from the MPs core mandate as legislators, we are also to ensure the welfare of our people; as such we are agents of change in our constituencies.
She therefore wondered how MPs could work effectively without the necessary tools such as the funds that the Central Government is required by law to release to them to embark on some key selected development projects in their constituencies.
These statutory funds which are long overdue, she said, had already been approved and allocated to parliamentarians in the budget.
The MP said almost with a few days into the last quarter of the year, the NDC government had failed to release the Common Fund, GETFund, NHIA Fund and HIPC funds to MPs to embark on their projects since January this year despite the fact that the Mahama administration had widened the tax net, increased road tolls among other taxes.
Very soon, creditors will start flocking the corridors of Parliament to demand their money from MPs. Its a big shame and the Minister of Finance must resign.
The NDC government has disappointed the good people of Ghana as teachers, nurses, doctors, among other public sector workers are all embarking on strike, whilst contractors are not being paid, common fund for district assemblies not released since January, she pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Tano North MP has toured some communities in her constituency to inspect ongoing projects that she has embarked upon.
Among the projects she visited were the Subriso CHPS Compound, which is about 80 percent complete; Subonpang mechanized borehole which is at completion stage and a 20-seater aqua privy toilet at Duayaw Nkwanta.
Ms Prempeh expressed her satisfaction at the pace of work and hoped to hand over the projects to the beneficiary communities as scheduled while thanking them for their support in ensuring the smooth completion of the projects.
She donated 50 street lights to assembly members and some selected communities in her quest to improve economic activities in the constituency.
The MP assured her constituents of her continuous resolve to empowering women and youth in the district through training in livelihood programmes, where the beneficiaries would be given start-up capital and start-up kits to establish their own businesses.
