Work On Kasoa Interchange To Start In December

Work on the Kasoa interchange, which seeks to ease traffic congestion in the 'mega city', is scheduled to take off in December, this year.

The $160 million project, according to the Director of Urban Roads (DUR), Mr Abass Awolu, is designed to improve both mobility on the main carriageway and accessibility within communities in the growing Ga South municipality such as Kasoa.

In an interview, Mr Awolu said in terms of mobility on the main road “we are putting an interchange at the Kasoa traffic light whereby the main road traffic from Accra or Winneba would be lifted over and above the Nyanyano-Bawjiase intersection”.

The entire 33-kilometre Kasoa-Amasaman road would also be reconstructed, while the current bailey bridge over the Densu River would be replaced with a concrete one.

The objective, Mr Awolu explained, was to provide a convenient alternative for motorists moving from Kasoa or other parts of the Central or Western regions towards Amasaman, Nsawam or even the Ashanti Region, to take away the volumes of traffic that now moved all the way to the Mallam Junction in Accra, for motorists to access the N1.

Mr Awolu said currently, because the Okrudu River acted as a natural barrier, strategic culverts would be provided to help motorists to traverse communities in Ga South and Kasoa, without moving onto the main road, which, apart from not being safe, was also a major contributory factor to the gridlock on the main Kasoa highway.

The DUR, Mr Awolu said, was also considering constructing an additional overpass at Galilea, near Amanfrom in Ga South and CP at Awutu-Senya in the Central Region, to further improve connections and eliminate unnecessary U-turns for motorists moving from Galilea to Amanfrom and from CP to Opeikuma.

The terminal for the future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is expected to be developed as part of the project, he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Awolu said the DUR was also discussing with the Awutu-Senya Municipal Assembly to identify potential terminals to be developed to replace the current ones dotted along the shoulders of roads at the Kasoa intersection. "Those terminals contribute heavily to the vehicular congestion," he added.

The Brazilian firm, Queiroz Galvao, which is executing the Kwame Nkrumah Circle project, will be constructing the interchange, the 33-kilometre Amasaman-Kasoa road and the 20 kilometres of roads in the Ga South municipality and Kasoa.

Mr Awolu said some local contractors would be engaged for other ancillary works.
