The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has congratulated MTN for being adjudged as the 2014 ‘Overall Best Taxpayer’ in the Large Taxpayer category by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
MTN, a member of the Chamber, was recognized for its compliance in a citation signed by the Commissioner-General, George Blankson.
A press statement issued by Kwaku Sakyi-Addo, CEO of the Chamber, said: “The industry is proud of MTN’s award. It is eloquent testimony to the direct contribution of mobile operators to government’s tax revenues.”
Mobile phone operators paid taxes in excess of Ghc1.1 billion to the government of Ghana in 2014.
According to a Deloitte study commissioned by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global industry body, mobile operators contribute 9.1% percent of Ghana’s total revenues in 2013, with their turnover representing 3.2% of Ghana’s GDP.
Some analysts suggest a bigger indirect impact considering the industry’s role as a catalyst and enabler for other sectors of the economy, such as commerce, banking, agriculture, education, as well as overall productivity.
