Precious reader, there is a saying that: “Anyone can come up with a goal but not everyone has the mindset to achieve it.” Goals are very important in our lives. The achievement of a goal not only gives one a sense of fulfillment but peace, joy and happiness.

One of the crucial steps in meeting a goal is taking action. But that is not the only thing one has to do; one must fix his eye on the goal and not allow any form of distractions.

Again one must persist to achieve worthwhile goals. Goals are not like prayers where miracles happen. They are like a destination that requires much strength, great sacrifices, self- motivation and unceasing prayers to reach.

One of the biggest obstacles to goal accomplishment is procrastination. By procrastination we mean the tendency of preferring to do easy but less urgent tasks and putting off to a later date tasks that areunpleasurable to do but urgent and of great importance. Procrastination is a deadly habit that has caused many people not to fulfill their dream.

When procrastinating, people come up with all sorts of rational reasoning to justify their actions. They give excuses as to why they have not even started working on their goals. They will tell you they are waiting for the perfect time which never comes.

To achieve your goals, you have to overcome the bad habit of procrastination.

There are simple yet effective measures one can take to end this unhealthy habit.

The first is to focus on the starting. Confucius, one of the great masters of wisdom once noted: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Be guided by the fact that Rome was not built in a day. The starting point is crucial in every human endeavor. To achieve any goal, one must plan and take action on it. Do not think too much about the finishing line, just start and work yourself up until you land in your success zone.

Putting a reward system in place can be an effective measure in countering procrastination. Corporate bodies have reward systems in place. Rewards are meant to encourage employees to increase productivity through their effective and efficient utilization of resources.

You too must put a reward at the finish line. This could be watching a football match, a movie or hanging out with friends after completing an important task. The reward at the finishing line will boost your confidence to strive to complete your tasks in time.

Making a to-do list has been found to be a good measure for dealing with procrastination. Know exactly what you want to do. Arrange the tasks in order of importance and put deadlines beside each task. Take one task at a time and work on it to completion. Remember an elephant cannot be eaten in one day. The secret is to eat it in bits until it is completely eaten.

In conclusion, procrastination is a dream killer. The one who procrastinates cannot achieve his goals. You can overcome procrastination by focusing on the starting, applying a reward system to motivate yourself and having a to-do list and being committed to it. Take action now. Focus, persevere and achieve results.

Yours in inspiration,
