Former Ghana President Jerry John Rawlings has tweeted his opposition to arrangements to provide space in Ghana for the operations of American military personnel.
In a tweet he posted Wednesday, the ex-military leader said while Ghanaians may love Americans, it cannot be to the extent that they would accommodate foreign troops on a large scale.
Since news of an impending arrangement to host American soldiers in Ghana emerged Tuesday, sections of the Ghanaian public have been critical of government, more so when Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul indicates that Cabinet has given the move its blessings and was seeking the approval of Parliament to give effect to the deal.
A number of security analysts have said the move, if approved, portends bad news for the nation’s security as it would become a target for anti-America terrorists. The minority in parliament have similarly kicked against the agreement, calling for its immediate withdrawal from Parliament.
Rawlings, in his tweet, said Ghanaians have had enough foreigners dominating their economic and social life and that adding foreign troops to the discomfort would be a bit too much.
“Ghanaians have felt stateless before in my lifetime. Let’s not go there again,” he says.

When there is a pressing issue in Ghana to address nana addo is drinking whiskey in Nigeria because of wedding of a businessman who sponsored his campaign. What a disgrace, a whole president stooping so low to a business man, why wouldn't he agree to that stoupid deal.
Did rawlings say they don't want Americans at all in Ghana? What he is saying is their troops in Ghana. I forgive you, you completed jss recently so you are yet to mature.
Tell nana addo in the face and stop being hypocrite. You always mention kuffour, MILLS and Mahama by name so what makes you afraid to mention nana addo by name to address the situation. Anyway, I commend you for at least commenting on the issue.
Instead of debating this in Parliament, I suggest a Bipartisan commission of security experts to carefully do the cost-benefit analysis. This suggestion is against the background that there are a host of parliamentarians who lack the knowledge and competence to draw conclusion on such a delicate issue.
Ei You guys dont want American soldiers on Ghanaian soil but you want American money and support. Which way to go. Do you guys prefer Chinese migrants or American soldiers. China is exploiting you guys big time yet no one is fuming. Ghana is really dumb. Soon you guys will be speaking Mandarine instead of English. Is not the same colonialism the Chinese are meting to Ghana? Most Ghanaians and their politicians dont even understand what is in that military deal. It is too complicated. Your governments had taken money from the Americans l suspect that is why these deals are going on. Hold your governments accountable and leave the Americans alone. America does not really need Ghana for nothing . They have different platforms to do anything they want. So you guys dont ever think America needs Ghana so bad for whatever. At the end of the day l suspect the deal will benefit Ghana more than the Americans in terms of socio economic development when harnessed well by the governments of both countries. The problem with Ghanaian politicians is that they are so corrupt to the teeth and point that they have lost the trust of the people.
THEY CAME TO CHRISTIANIZE, CIVILIZE AND COLONIZE. WE HAVE BEEN EDUCATED. WE HAVE BEEN COMMERCIALIZED. NOW IT IS TIME TO ENSLAVE AGAIN.
That is why FREE SHS is very important for Ghana so the average Ghanaian can read, write and understand. The NDC WICKED and secretly signed an almost similar agreement with the US without parliamentary approval. Now a God fearing and transparent NPP gov wants such to be laid before parliament and NDC says what? Everyone must read the 1998 and 2015 agreement Ghana had with the US and signed by NDC! Thank you Nana and NPP for respecting Ghanains by bring this before parliament!
Ahhhhhhhh, papa J! when did you realize this? Now? And not in 1998 or 2015? Hypocrites! It was your NDC gov that allowed them in Ghana in the first place. Or you didn't know?
when an elder of a family shares his view on a matter that concerns the future of his family you must listen to him carefully.
Frankly I don't get it ; WHY IS THE BLACK MAN SO STOOOOOPID !!!!!!;why on earth does Nana Addo allow such aggreement to be entertained because the US does not make frineds and have no frineds ;the US only seeks their interest ;if it will benefit the US they will find ways to be your artificial frined ; this agreement is only in the interest of the US but eventually will leave your country in a mess besides once the US has a military base ; all the secret service operatives from all over the world will be attracted to Ghana ; the US is vying to use Ghana for a purpose and it is up to Nana Addo to think why the Us wants a base in Ghana for only $20million ; the US will DESTROY GHANA SOONER OR LATER : REMEMBER GADDAFI !!!!!!
