You Should Want To Be Better

In a few days, we will be drawing the curtains on the year 2021. For some people, this has been an amazing year. For others, the narrative is not a good one.

Regardless of your life’s situation, you have something to be thankful for. Don't worry if your life is not as you expected it to be. Whatever you're going through, know that others have weathered it.

This is part of the wonderful story of your life; it'll soon be one of the pages and not the last page. As we prepare to meet the new year, I would like to draw your attention to a very crucial principle in life.

Dear friend, I hope you can agree with me that we live in amazing times where anything is possible? There's no telling what is not possible in recent times. The global technology industry keeps making our lives easier by the day.

What took an hour to do a decade ago can be done in just 10 minutes or less. Most of the things we believed weren’t possible are now possible.

Every day the number of researches published is mind blowing. Researchers are making ground-breaking discoveries which are disproving some of the “truths” we’ve always known.

If you are 30 years old and you’ve always believed that one plus one is three, you’ve been living three decades of life.

More evident than ever is the fact that not only goods have expiry dates. Knowledge has always been a silent passenger on the expiry date wagon.

Studies are making amazing findings and it is possible what you knew last week about a subject could be disproved this week. Our world is changing at a very fast rate and we can use it to our advantage.

We must want to learn more considering the erratic nature of our world. Those who are educated will do very well in this world. I think that there are a lot of schooled graduates and this is worrying. Those who go to school get a certificate but those who get an education get problem solving skills and are adaptable.

Your lack of interest in wanting to learn more is a sure sign of your approaching redundancy. One day, a construction firm hired five labourers for a project which would last for three years.

In the first year of the project, one of them realised that a new technology had been introduced so he decided to add value to himself by learning how to use the technology which had been introduced. His colleagues felt there was no need because they had been doing their work for years and had never been jobless. In the second year of the project, management had to let some of the labourers go home because their services were no longer needed. The labourer who had sacrificed and learned how to use the latest technology could fit in therefore, he was spared.

Adding value to yourself today by reading a book, attending a workshop, volunteering, listening to a podcast will come in handy someday. Isaac Asimov, an American writer and professor of biochemistry, puts it this way, “Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is.”

In adding value to oneself, there's no end. Oftentimes, we think that what we know and what we can do is enough. On the flip side, people who are making real impact and progress are those who are committing themselves to everyday learning.

Prince Ampofo, the leader of the PALM ministry, believes that you will shrink the opportunities you have to what you know. From today, you should be mindful about the seeds of knowledge you are sowing into your life. Are you sowing the right seeds? Are you sowing enough seeds?
