The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe has appealed to government to increase budgetary allocation for research in the country to promote development.

He made the appeal today at the launch of the 30th Anniversary of the Moguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research of the University.

He lauded the major role being played by the Institute in the promotion of Health Care in Ghana and the continent in general and called for more funding from government to expand the institute’s research activities. The Director of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Prof. Alexander Nyarko said, the institute is making efforts to expand research into the development of herbal medicines for the treatment of diseases and has already partnered Phytica Limited in the private sector to develop and conduct clinical trials on a local plant for the treatment of malaria.

The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency, Keiichi Katakami said, the establishment of the Moguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, has helped to promote the friendly relation between Ghana and Japan. He hoped the Institute will maintain its leading role in researching into infectious diseases in West Africa.
