MTN GHANA FOUNDATION SUPPORTS TSITO AND AKATSI WITH EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE
MTN Ghana acknowledges that quality education can only be attained through the provision of the requisite infrastructure to enhance effective teaching and learning. It is this regard that MTN Ghana Foundation recently commissioned a three unit classroom block and a library for Akatsi D/A Basic School and Tsito Senior Technical High School respectively.
Durbars were held in both schools to mark the commissioning of the two projects. The Tsito Senior Technical High School Library was the first to be commissioned on 23rd February followed by the commissioning of the school block at Akatsi the next day.
The lack of adequate infrastructure in these schools were brought to the attention of the MTN Ghana Foundation through Madam Alice Gligui-Denueme, the first runner-up for the 2008 National Best Teacher Awards and other community members. Prior to this provision, the Akatsi D/A Basic School held classes for some pupils under trees.
The Corporate Services Executive of MTN and Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, who commissioned the Library project, said that there is a positive correlation between patronising libraries and academic excellence.
She said, schools in remote areas and especially indigenous communities are said to have challenges in literacy and numeracy. The school library is very important in efforts to close the educational gap and I believe this is a great opportunity for students in Tsito Senior High to excel in their school work.
She encouraged the students to take reading very seriously by visiting the library regularly during their leisure period. The library has the capacity to seat about 108 students at a time.
In a related development, a three unit classroom block for Akatsi was commissioned by Mrs. Nabilla Williams, a board member of MTN Ghana Foundation. She mentioned that MTN Ghana Foundation finds fulfilment in supporting investment in Ghanas educational sector to help enrich the lives of community members.
She said these social investments are a way of giving back to society in appreciation for the support we receive in our business operations. MTN recognises the crucial role quality education plays in the socio- economic development of every nation.
The heads of the two institutions expressed their gratitude to MTN for the support and commended the organisation for playing its role as a good corporate citizen. They were optimistic that the infrastructure provided would positively enhance teaching and learning and translate into improved performances in the schools. They pledged to put the resources to good use and also appealed for continuous support for the schools.
The District Chief Executive of Akatsi, welcomed the kind gesture of MTN and said that pledged the Assemblys ready to partner with corporate bodies in developing the district. He assured the school of governments support.
Mr. Edmund Gbetudeme who spoke on behalf of the District Director of Education, commended MTN for truly living up to its name. He urged the community to make good use of the school block and also ensure its proper maintenance.
Both events were attended by the school authorities, students, traditional leaders, representatives from the Regional Library Board and community members.
The MTN Ghana Foundation which was established in 2007, has invested a total of six million eight hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (GH6, 800,000.00) in various Corporate Social Responsibility projects across the country.
Some of the major projects are the construction of a sixteen unit dormitory block for Akropong School for the Blind, the provision of twenty boreholes for communities in the Northern region, the support towards the construction of an Intensive Care Unit at the Princess Marie Louise Childrens Hospital and the setting up of 10 ICT Learning Centres in the 10 regions.
