Fake Syllabus…In Asuogyaman Schools

A suspicious syllabi (plural for syllabus) is being used for teaching in public schools in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern Region, Today’s investigations has revealed.

The purported syllabi of which Today has a copy contains huge discrepancies from the approved one by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The first page of the dubious syllabus is numbered (i), followed by page 30 to the last page 51 and unlike the approved one, does not contain a preface, acknowledgement, grading system, procedure on continuous assessment, guidelines for the syllabus, among others.

“The destiny of the children is in danger as teachers and head teachers who attempt to seek explanations about the supposed syllabus from the Directors of Education at the district are being intimidated. Some are threatened with demotion or transfers,” a head teacher with staff identification number 3693/88, Mr. Samuel Rexford Asante, disclosed.

The head teacher has consequently petitioned the Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the three traditional areas of the Asuogyaman area and other concerned authorities in the district.

Captioned, “Petition to investigate and stop the agenda of exploitation, intimidation and victimization of teachers leading to unprecedented retrogression of quality education in the Asuogyaman district by some senior officers of education,” the petition seeks to call on these agencies to help stop the use of the syllabi.

“Is it not the responsibility of the government to provide the resources needed to achieve quality education for all? It would interest you to know that the Asuogyaman District Education Office has photocopied 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012 syllabi under the pretext that they were revised syllabi and sold them to the public schools based on enrollment…I am ready to give you one for your perusal,” a portion of the petition read.

According to the petitioner, “schools with enrollment range of 30-50 paid GH¢10; 51-100 paid GH¢20; 101-150 paid GH¢ 30 while 151 and above paid GH¢ 40”.

He recalled in the petition that on the May 21, 2013, Deputy Director Supervision, Mr. Propser Yekple, addressing a head teachers meeting arrogantly referred to the head teachers saying, “Some of you are still heads because there are no human beings to replace you”.

Mr. Asante asserted that Mr. Yekple refused to give the head teachers the opportunity to react.

For him, the teachers and colleague Head teachers in the district “have lost confidence in Mr. Yekple to help ensure quality education is achieved to boost manpower need of the country”.
