The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) has presented 4,000 laptops, to 94 senior high schools (SHSs) in the Volta Region.

Each science based school received 50 laptops, while other schools received 40 each.

The presentation is in line with a reviewed policy to accord priority to SHSs and technical and vocational institutes to equip their laboratories.

In a speech read on his behalf at the presentation ceremony held at Mawuli School, the Environment Minister, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, said the project, which commenced in 2010, demonstrated the governments commitment to promote ICT in the country.

He said the government regarded ICT as an important tool for future development.

Dr OtengAdjei said it was internationally accepted that no country could ever eradicate poverty without improving on the quality of its education for all, and underscored the commitment of the government to provide educational systems and facilities for national development.

Laptops not personal property

The minister said the laptops were not the personal assets of teachers, neither were they meant for administrative work.

He said faulty laptops could be returned to the regional office of rlg Limited for replacement, since they were under a one-year warranty.

In an address read on his behalf, the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, said the laptops were being supplied to the schools with the objective of bringing Ghanaian students at par with others at their level in other parts of the world.

In an address, the Volta Regional Director of GES, Mr Emmanuel Keteku, said 200 teachers had been trained to teach ICT in the Volta Region, adding that 280 out of 3,950 basic schools had also received computers.

The Headmaster of the Mawuli School, Mr J.M.K Osei-Nyansah, said the beneficiary schools were happy, and promised that the laptops would be used to improve teaching and learning in the schools.
