Staff of Tigo Ghana Ltd., operators of one of Ghana’s leading telecoms network, recently paid a visit to New Ebu Methodist Basic School where they interacted and taught the pupils in an effort to inspire them.

The trip forms part of Tigo’s employee engagement initiative dubbed ‘Tigo Spirit’ which is a monthly Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity that affords staff the opportunity to volunteer their services and utilize their skills, time and expertise to reach out to vulnerable groups and people to improve their lives.

Under the theme “My Tigo Teacher” the initiative seeks to inspire, motivate and empower young deprived school children to be studious and focused to enable them realize their dreams and aspirations.

Subjects taught by staff include English, Mathematics, Religious and Moral Education (R.M.E), Information Communication Technology (ICT), and General Science among others. New Ebu is a deprived community in the Central Region close to Cape Coast and the choice of a school in New Ebu was borne out by the need to offer hope to the pupils, according to James Nyarko, the Brands Image Coordinator for Tigo’s Western Territory.

James further expressed the hope that the visit and the activities undertaken by the staff will impact positively on the learning activities of the pupils.

In a chat with Albert Quainoo, headmaster of New Ebu Basic School, he expressed his appreciation to Tigo for the choice of his school to be the beneficiary of Tigo’s employee outreach programme. He revealed that the visit by Tigo was very important for the development of pupils as the kids were “being introduced to new faces.”

He further underscored the need for such programmes for children’s development saying “I would have liked it if Tigo staff would be coming around at least once every month for the next one year.”

He appealed to benevolent organizations like Tigo to come to the aid of the community in building a new place of convenience for the community as the existing one was located close to the school and people sometimes defecate in the classrooms when the doors to the place are locked as happened always after six in the evening.

In a good show of support for the programme, teachers of the school also expressed their appreciation to Tigo as they believed that what the children had been taught would be reinforced by what the staff of Tigo came to teach.
