The Kadjebi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Daniel Agbesi Latsu has appealed to organized groups to help educate Ghanaians on their rights and civic responsibilities. According to him, civic education is not the responsibility of NCCE alone, but for all Ghanaians.

The Kadjebi District Director of the NCCE said this at a sensitization programme organized by his outfit for the Apostles’ Revelation Society (A.R.S) Women Council at Dodi-Papase in the Kadjebi District of the Volta region recently.

He noted that the church played a vital role in national development and could, therefore, serve as a platform to disseminate critical information, relevant to the development of the nation. He said all Ghanaians have the responsibility of educating each other on government programmes at public gatherings; such as festivals, town hall meetings, market square, church and mosque.

Mr. Latsu said democracy, respect for human rights, creating of awareness of the citizens’ civic rights and responsibilities, the promotion of general economic and social development and progress could only be meaningful  to the citizens if they were well informed about all these issues.

He noted that the time had come for Ghanaians to demonstrate high level of patriotism and be fully committed to their civic duties, which include participation in national elections with emphasis on the pending District level elections, pay taxes regularly and understand the constitution well enough to enable them to contribute to national development.

The Kadjebi District Director of the NCCE said: “As Ghanaians we should withstand all challenges, mitigate any weaknesses and threats, manage all opportunities and consolidate our strength as committed citizens by relegating our parochial interests to the background.”

An Assistant Civic Education Officer at the Kadjebi NCCE office, Mr. Gabriel Dzanka, on his part expressed concern over the lukewarm attitude women normally showed towards taking up leadership positions particularly at the local and national level.

He pleaded with women to change their mind-set in relation to holding leadership positions by getting themselves involved in the decision-making processes since their involvement was crucial to national development.

The Secretary to the Dodi-Papase A.R.S Women Council, Miss Grace Medowokpor, thanked the management and staff of the NCCE for the programme and called for more of such activities to help educate the people on their basic rights and responsibilities, which she noted, would go a long way to erase false impressions the people have concerning their civil rights and responsibilities relevant to national growth and development.

Ms. Medowokpor however, complained bitterly about unhealthy relationship between some teachers and school girls stressing that the development infringed upon the basic human rights of these girls.
