Professor Reverend Frank John Eshun, Rector of the Takoradi Polytechnic, has called on students to eschew laziness and other negative tendencies that could prevent them from getting the best out of their polytechnic education.

He said the semester system operated by the polytechnic was very challenging and required consistent work, regular attendance to lectures and the completion of all continuous assessment.

Professor Eshun said this when he officially admitted 2,302 fresh students to pursue various Degree and High National Diploma programmes at the polytechnic.

The formal induction into the polytechnic would also offer them unique opportunity to be recognised as future alumni of the school, as well as enjoy all rights and privileges of the premier academic institution.

The polytechnic received 3,950 applications for the 2015/2016 academic year, out of which 2,975 were offered admission; however, only 2,302 enrolled for the academic year.

The rector of the polytechnic urged the students to prioritise academic work and strive to set high academic and moral standards for themselves.

He said the freedom that came with tertiary education must be used to their advantage rather than wasting time on unprofitable ventures.

Reverend Professor Eshun said the polytechnic operated an open-door policy, and called on them to use appropriate channels in resolving issues.

In a related development, Professor Reverend Frank Eshun, former Dean for Degree Programmes of the Takoradi Polytechnic, has been elected and inducted as the new rector for the polytechnic.

Professor Eshun, who had served the polytechnic in various capacities as lecturer, dean and vice rector was inducted into office by Mr Joseph Emmanuel Ackah, the Council Chairman for the polytechnic.

The Council Chairman, together with the former rector, Rev Professor Daniel Nyarko, decorated the new rector with the official robe of office.

Mr Ackah charged the new rector to execute his responsibilities with aptness and confidence, and ensure an all-inclusive governance.

He said as the polytechnic progresses into a technical university, the new rector must come up with new ideas and approaches and apply them with tact and determination to propel the school to it next level of academic excellence.

Professor Nyarko, whilst congratulating the new rector, said, “I wholeheartedly encourage you to push to the utmost. Do not let physical hindrances limit your focus and vision”.

Professor Eshun, the new rector of the school, expressed enormous gratitude to his predecessors for bringing the polytechnic this far, adding, "The main force I shall rely on, however, as I embark on my responsibilities, are the current members of the polytechnic, that is staff and students ".

He called for unity, mutual respect and trust for one another, adding, "I believe we shall be able to make our home - Takoradi Polytechnic - a lavish garden of knowledge and scientific discovery."

Outlining his vision, Prof Eshun mentioned that his major preoccupation would be positioning the polytechnic as a centre of excellence for tertiary, technical and vocational education and applied research to drive economic growth.

Other strategic priorities for the period 2016 to 2021 would include human resource development, infrastructure growth, increased resources mobilisation, research and innovation, science and technology, partnership and networking.

The rest are corporate governance, staff and students services, quality assurance, academic programmes and Information Communications Technology.
