Korle-Bu Rejects Pregnant Women

MANAGEMENT OF the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has disclosed that the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department (OGD) of the hospital is full beyond its capacity.

In an interview with DAILY GUIDE, Mustapha Salifu, Public Relations Officer (PRO), said as a result of this, the department stopped accepting patients without proper referrals to the hospitals from Tuesday, May 24.

“It is only duly referred patients who will be accepted for further management,” he said. According to him, this move has been adopted as a measure of reducing congestion and to ensure proper management of the large number of patients already on admission.

He explained that the directive will not affect emergency cases, which will be appropriately triaged.

He further stated that the department has a team in place to offer telephone assistance to practitioners in hospitals and facilities who have the requisite facilities but would be unable to manage complicated cases.

The PRO explained that the KBTH is a tertiary hospital which should treat only complicated and emergency cases and not minor ones that can be treated at the local level.

He cited a case that was brought to the hospital three days ago, saying an asthmatic patient was due to deliver her baby but instead of her regular health facility taking care of her, officials there immediately referred her to his outfit making it difficult to attend to the numerous patients that are already there.

He continued that the patient was not under any form of attack that could jeopardize her and the unborn child yet the health facility referred her to Korle-Bu.

The hospital is therefore pleading with the public to abide by these new directives in order for the facility to work according to its real status.
