The Ministry of Health has shot down media publications inferring that it is harbouring workers who are over the statutory retirement age of 60.
According to the Ghanaian Times newspaper of Tuesday, there are over 600 government workers aged between 60 and 110 years who are still on the Ghana government’s payroll.
According to the paper, two ministries - Education and Health - accounted for the numbers.
The paper indicated that the revelation was contained in the report of the Auditor General on the Public Account of Ghana (Consolidated Fund) for the year ended December 31, 2010.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health (MoH), Tony Goodman, intimated that “in the essential services where you have no manpower in some areas, people above age 60 are given contracts to perform some duties. ”
Goodman added: “You agree with me that in some areas manpower is just not there so some of those people are needed to just hold the fort.
“Let’s say in an area where you have no specialised personnel and you needed somebody to be there, you cannot say because you are age 60, you have to go for that position to be vacant. It’s a government policy. ”
