Ms Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Health has expressed the need for an intensified public health education in 2014 across the country.

Ms Ayittey said health education would educate Ghanaians on how to protect their lives on communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as reduce the incident of teenage pregnancy.

The Minister said this at a press soiree in Accra to express appreciation to journalists for their dedication and efforts in the coverage of its programmes and events for in 2013.

She called on all and sundry to join the crusade to intensify education on adolescent reproductive and health issues among the youth.

Ms Ayittey said the government’s programme to refurbish and re-equip the three teaching hospitals to enhance healthcare delivery is on course and that some modern facilities had been installed at these facilities while some of their departments had been refurbished.

The three teaching hospitals are the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Ms Ayittey said the hospitals are being equipped with modern diagnostic machines which could detect diseases and all kinds.

She said re-equipping of the teaching hospitals is essential, since they serve as referral medical facilities.

She said the Ministry had secured mobile scanning machines while midwives and nurses would be trained for pregnant women to have access to the scanning services, especially in the rural areas to reduce infant mortality.

Ms Ayittey said the Ministry would established more blood centres for people to donate blood and save lives since the health of an individual is critical to socio-economic development.
