Snippets of information reaching peacefmonline.com indicate that Mr. Atta Kwabena Kumah, a Mortuary Attendant at the 37 Military Hospital who gained profuse media attention following the narration of a story about him by ex-President Jerry John Rawlings at the National Congress of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), held at Tamale last year, has passed onto eternal glory.
Peacefmonline.com sources say Atta Mortuary Man passed away at the 37 Military Hospital yesterday, Friday, July 8 after a short illness.
He hails from Kete Krachi in the Volta region and died at the age of 82.
Atta is said to have worked at the 37 Military Hospital Morgue for 42 years.
During the 8th Delegates' Congress of the ruling NDC held between January 15-17 at the Tamale West African Examinations Hall which saw party members thought to be either pro-Rawlings or pro-Mills gaining key positions in the party, ex-President Rawlings upon taking his turn to address the congress told a story about a so-called friend of his called Atta.
NARRATION:
Mr. Atta Kwabena Kumah, a Mortuary Attendant at the 37 Military Hospital, could not go home one night, because it had rained rather heavily. He decided to stay the night at the Mortuary.
As it began to get cold, Mr. Atta pulled a white sheet off one the corpses and wrapped himself in it. He began to feel like urinating so he went outside, still with the white sheet wrapped round him.
While Mr. Atta was urinating, a soldier passing by saw what he thought was a ghost, so he quickened his steps in the attempt to escape the apparition. Mr. Atta, also probably thinking that the soldier had seen something dangerous or unpleasant, also followed the soldier.
The faster the soldier moved the quicker Mr. Atta followed the soldier. Both men eventually found themselves in the safety of a guardroom, only for them to discover that they were both human beings, but no apparitions.
Truth be told, there was no discernible relevance of Mr. Rawlings story, as far as the time and the occasion were concerned. This conclusion was reached based upon interactions with some leading NDC members after Mr Rawlings' narration.
Atta the mortuary man, which was supposed to be a comic relief, rather confused the delegates in Tamale.
Yet, when President Mills took his turn to address the congress, he stated that after listening to the former president about the story of Atta, the mortuary man, I have on a lighter note decided to drop Atta from my name.
