A STREET thug who murdered British honeymooners Ben and Catherine Mullany on a Caribbean isle was facing execution last night.
Kaniel Martin, 23, and accomplice Avie Howell, 20, shot the newlyweds before stealing just two cheap mobile phones, a budget camera and a small amount of cash. The pair were found guilty of murder on the third anniversary of the crime following a two-month trial in St John's, the capital of Antigua.
Prosecutors will now decide whether to seek the death penalty for Martin, whose street name was Sample Dan.
Howell, known as Shaka, was a juvenile at the time of the killings. He could face a life sentence. Neither has shown any remorse or explained why they killed for such slim pickings.
Doctor Catherine, 31, died almost instantly after the pair burst into the chalet she shared with physiotherapist Ben at Antigua's exclusive Cocos Hotel. Ben, also 31, died a week later.
The pair are buried at the church in Cilybebyll, South Wales, where they wed.
Both sets of parents were in court to hear the verdict. They wept and hugged each other, and later issued a statement saying: "There is no joy, just relief. Ben and Cath will live in our hearts forever."
