As predicted by the metrological agency that this year would record heavy rainfall, Accra, on Monday and Tuesday nights, received its fair share of the heavy downpours, which was accompanied by heavy storms.
The storms, which each lasted about two hours, left in their wake collapsed billboards, felled trees, and buildings with their roofs ripped off. Even though no flood incidents have been reported so far, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NSDMO), at a security-civilian training workshop, gave an assurance of its preparedness towards any disaster.
The rains also exposed the citys dangers, such as choked gutters and drains, houses and structures on waterways among others. Floods in Accra, although not a new thing, as it happens every year, the city authorities seem to be more concerned when the occasional disaster unfolds.
At this period when most parts of Accra are engulfed in garbage, with no place to properly dispose of refuse, the drains, however, have become the alternative for disposing of refuse for some people at night.
Although, there is also no denying that city authorities like the assemblies are doing their part to manage waste, residents, who are directly affected by floods must also pay their in dues in keeping the environment clean.
