“I think the Ivoirians are insincere, inconsistent and dubious…it is worrying….honestly when you check the records, it is annoying; they irritate me…” says Kweku Baako, Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper.
The renowned Editor believes the Ivorians are now laying claim to the boundary because Ghana recently struck oil and gas in commercial quantities.
“Records and history shows that they did not give a damn about all those things, but once we have found oil they are trying to review and rewrite history...The inconsistency and the duplicity that is informing them bothers me and for once I think they being very wicked friends”, he added
Cote d'Ivoire claims claims Ghana's territorial waters at West Cape Three points currently being operated by oil giants Tullow under the Tweneboah-Enyera-Ntoumme (TEN) project belongs to them creating problems for operators on the field.
Efforts to resolve matters amicably have proven futile; including 10 failed attempts at negotiating with Cote d'Ivoire
Matters came to a head after the Ivorians sent a threatening letter to the explorers asking them to halt operations in the area.
In September, 2014 Ghana then proceeded to the Special Chamber of the International Tribunal for the Laws of the Sea (ITLOS) in Humburg, Germany.
The Special Chamber of the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg on Saturday rejected Côte d’Ivoire’s request that Ghana be ordered to suspend all oil exploration and exploitation in the disputed zone.
ITLOS however ordered a number of provisional measures which both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are required to comply with; including continued cooperation until ITLOS gives its decision on the maritime boundary dispute which is expected in late 2017.
Speaking to the issue during a panel discussion on ‘Kokrokoo’, PEACE FM's flagship programme, Kweku Baako described the Ivorians as ‘inconsistent and insincere’.
“I have a dogmatic stance on it…I think the Ivoirians are insincere, inconsistent and dubious…it is worrying….honestly when you check the records, it is annoying; they irritate me just because we’ve seen oil and gas, suddenly they want to rewrite history. Had it not been the oil, I don’t think they will behave this way. For once, I think they are being wicked friends…that is why they are behaving this way and I am praying that it will not go in their favour…I hope the ultimate goes in our favour but I don’t have the power to declare,” he indicated.
