Intense trading at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange has resumed, after the lull last week, due to electioneering activities.

The pavements along the Interchange were taken over by traders who displayed their wares at both sides of the lane, restricting the movement of pedestrians.

The situation arose because the taskforce of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, have abandoned their duty posts at the interchange following the victory of the New Patriotic Party in last Wednesday’s-election.

As early as 6:30 yesterday morning, The Ghanaian Times observed traders setting up their tables and other items on the pavements to display their goods.

When the Times visited again in the afternoon, some of the traders had repositioned the barriers erected by the contractors of the Interchange, to create more space for their business.

One trader who spoke to The Ghanaian Times, said she was motivated by the NPP’s win to set up business on the pavement, stating, “Now that my party is in power, I’m also entitled to sell here to make some money to help my family”.

Asked on whether they would leave if the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) taskforce asked them to, some said they would and return after the inauguration of Nana Akufo-Addo as President on January 7.

The Ghanaian Times also observed that the situation is creating problems for drivers who are compelled to drive recklessly in order to avoid the traders, and this is putting the lives of pedestrians at risk.
