Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has told privately trained nurses who have been picketing at the health ministry for two days now that they cannot be employed, even if they put a knife to his throat.
The Coalition for unemployed Private Nurses Association stormed the Ministry of Health on Monday, July 31 to demand postings.
According to the unemployed nurses, numbering over 300, they have been discriminated against since 2010.
Addressing the nurses at the health Ministry, Mr. Agyeman-Manu said there is nothing he can do about their situation.
“I have told you that before I assumed office as the Health Minister, the financial clearance has been issued with names of people already on it, and it makes your situation bad.
“So as it stands now I cannot change it but I have begun processes to have privately trained nurses employed but the financial clearance is not here. As I stand here now even if you put a knife to my throat I cannot employ you because I don’t have the financial clearance”.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the protesting nurses Doreen Boateng has expressed worry over the utterances of the minister.
“In fact, it’s a problem, how can a whole father of health tell us that even if we put a knife at his throat there is nothing he could do for us.”
She added that they will continue to picket until their demands are met.
“We are going to be there because we think that they are not telling us the truth, until they come out to assure us to come back at a particular date we will adhere, but if they just give us verbal promises, we will continue to loiter around.”

it is a shame, we all admire USA because of its development. Many Ghanaians do nursing jobs in USA because there are vacacies for such jobs. It is a shame that Ghana some of these nurses will go to USA and get jobs. But Ghana president will go to USA and urge them to 'come and help develop Ghana." Are we stupppppiddd or it is our leaders who are stuuuuupppppiddd? Which is which???
You guys must learn to accept the truth even if it hurts, this picketing is becoming too mus=ch and the minister has had enough of that already so that is all he can tell them since they are not ready for any verbal promises and if the minister makes a promise by mentioning a day they will be posted and he is not able to do it that too will become another issue. @exdoe, he only called a spade by its name period, @asem, but who is saying they are regarded as traders? these private schools must post their own students even though they are also nurses or these training sectors must be closed down for good leaving the public nursing alone. @mind ur language a bit, he has had enough of their behaviour so thats the truth. @igp, why dont u post them to those countries u are mentioniing, the NDC gove left huge backlogs and this government in 7months has manage to post those ones and now these private ones too are here with their troubles whiles we have new graduates to be posted soon, is time people learn to know the kind of training institution to go inorder not to be affected in future
master dont be shallow minded. During the mahama led admin both private and public sectors were affected but now those who went to the public nursing and were not posted during Mahama tenure have been posted and even some graduated this year and will also be post soon. why must the government post these private nurses too, why didn't they better their results to go to the public sector rather. Those private hospitals and the private nursing training must go into an agreement and post their students to the private hospitals, we need professionals and that is why we are slowly taking off the certificate nursing from the system. The mininster have had enough so that was all he could say to them
when these same nurses were picketing under the mahama admin, the opposition urged them by joining them to mount pressure on the then administration to employ them. today they are back tracking and using "***barred word***". Employ them Mr. Minister..you promised them jobs, nursing training allowance and teacher training allowances, we are waiting for you to fulfill those promises....
Do you have any contract with the government? No!!! You went to private Nursing Institutions so go and look for private jobs. Must all unemployed graduates picket at the Labour and Employment Ministry? You are there speaking with no regards to authority but at the end of the day you have no contract or promise from government. Where from this we voted for you syndrome. I salute the Minister. Well spoken. Educated illiterates, get a grip.
Its good to call a 'Spade' a Spade' sometimes, people. This attitude is becoming unbecoming, since when did picketing become the other of the day? this is uncivilised behaviour, 'one way' people of Ghana. You send your weak passes to private institutions and turn round to come and disturb government for jobs. Why don't you turn your eyes on private hospitals or clinics too? give us a brak.
If only politicians will be truthful I believe there will be some kind of sanity. Lies here & there to deceive the masses since time immemorial
The situation is more complex than what we see from the outside, the deal we entered into with the IMF is the cause of all these problems with employment. There is a freeze on public sector employment to help cut down the government wage bill this however is not supposed to affect employment in health services and education but because government has no money these sectors have suffered collateral damage. Until and unless the economy improves and we get out of that arrangement with the IMF l am afraid this situation will persist. The Minister is powerless but that also does not mean he should talk 'by heart'
Hahaha, am so happy. Next time vote for big promises. Truth is only one. Learn some lessons now.
Cease fire minister lets help these ones and make it clear to those in school and those planning to go to private nursing training schools that henceforth if you complete training, it isn't the govt. who will find u jobs so that it become clear to everyone, that is my small advice from my small corner as Koo. Thanks everybody.
