Professor Stephen Adei, the renowned administrator and educationist has joined the debate on who founded Ghana, saying that there is no reason to celebrate Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister of the country, as the founder of Ghana.
According to him, Dr Kwame Nkrumah broke out of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), the first political movement to be formed in the country to fight the colonial powers because he wanted to become a Prime Minister.
He explained that if Kwame Nkrumah had been with the UGCC to fight for the country's independence, there was no way he [Nkrumah] could have become a Prime Minister, hence breaking away from the united front to form his own political party, the Conventions People's Party (CPP).
Speaking at the official opening of a photo exhibition by the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) at the La Palm Royal Hotel in Accra, dubbed 60years through the lens of Graphic, Prof Adei said there is no need to celebrate him [Nkrumah] as the founder of Ghana since others started the fight before he joined.
He said one of the founders of UGCC, Paa Grant, paid for the travelling expenses of Kwame Nkrumah to come from abroad to the country to become the secretary of UGCC.
He said since there was already a political movement with the aim of emancipating the country from the shackles of colonial powers, Kwame Nkrumah cannot be solely celebrated as the founder of Ghana.
Background
There is an ongoing debate in Ghana as to who or whom to celebrate as the founder or founders of Ghana.
While some think only Kwame Nkrumah needed to be celebrated as the founder of the country, others are of the view that many people contributed to the country's independence struggle, hence the need to celebrate all actors that contributed to the country's political liberty from colonial masters.

Let your voice be heard, perhaps, you might get an appointment. I live in the States. I met a number of foreigners. Once you said you are from GH, the next most likely name is Kwame Nkrumah. I think Yaanoom have a long way to go to rewrite this "blunder". They should pursue the self-glorifying agenda, but not with our money.
Prof., I hear you also preach the word of God at times, tell your congregation Jesus Christ is not the foundation of Christianity since John the Baptist and others started the fight before he came into the picture. This political jingoism must stop, it's very irritating.
Please Nkrumah name has swept the globe, let npp go to UN, AU, Cuba, Singapore, India, Vietnam, Congo and go and erase that history. Please change KNuS to JBUST. concert people
All these noises and intellectual biases will not change history. Independent of Ghana was fought for by a group of people but the one who finished the race is Nkrumah. In Ivory Coast it was Ofoe Buenye,Tog-Olympio, South Africa-Mandela, Kenya-kenyatta, Malawi-Kamuzu Banda,Tazania-KK kawunda, Zimbabwe-Mugabe etc. It is thus illogical and intellectually deficient to argue that Nkrumah, JB Danqua, William Ofori- Atta etc were Ghana. Nkrumah"s statue is in front of Africa Union Building in Ethiopia because the man is a global icon not these rural tribal people you guys are fighting for.
WHY DO YOU PEOPLE WANT EVERYBODY TO THINK AND ACCEPT FACTS THE WAY YOU DO. EVEN IN CHRISTIANITY OR ISLAM WHERE THERE IS ONE RESPECTIVE HOLY BOOK, THERE ARE VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS. IF SOMEONE'S FACTS HE HAS ASSEMBLED LEADS THE ONE TO A CERTAIN CONCLUSION, WHY DO YOU INSULT HIM AS BEING DISHONEST. LEARN TO ACCOMMODATE EACH OTHER'S VIEWS EVEN IF YOU THINK THE PERSON IS IN ERROR. TRUTH: NOBODY FOUNDED GHANA. GHANA HAS ALWAYS BEEN FROM THE TIME THE GUANS FIRST OCCUPIED PART OF THE LAND MASS AND OTHER TRIBES SUBSEQUENTLY SETTLED IN OTHER PARTS. THE EUROPEANS CAME IN AND COLONIZED THE PEOPLE. AGITATIONS (LOW LEVEL, THOUGH) FOR FREEDOM STARTED LONG BEFORE NKRUMAH AND JB DANQUAH WERE BORN. LATER ON, NKRUMAH EVENTUALLY LED THE PEOPLE OF GOLD COAST (OR GHANA,FOR THAT MATTER)TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE FROM COLONIAL RULE. THEREFORE, NKRUMAH LED GHANA TO INDEPENDENCE...PRECISION. NEITHER NKRUMAH NOR ANYONE FOUNDED GHANA. PERIOD!!!!!
Prof.is right our history need to be revisited, Nkrumah was not the only one who contributed to our independent, there were other stakeholders, period.
What Prof. is saying is the truth and resorting to insults will never change the facts. What is the essence of the Big Six, then?. Even though the Big Six comprises of renowned personalities made up of: J. B.Danquah, Ebenezer Ako Adjei, Emmanuel Obetsebi Lamptey, Kwame Nkrumah, Edward Akufo-Addo, William Ofori Atta; even these people solely cannot be credited with the struggles towards independence as such the founding fathers. The roles played by especially Sargent Adjetey, who was gunned down by the military protecting the Governor with Corporal Attipoe, Private Odartey Lamptey barely 10 years in 1948 before independence should have been named as the originates to the route to Independence of Ghana. Where was Kwame Nkrumah? He played his part, fine, but was not around when the blood is been shed as we all sing in our National Anthem. The more we as a country distort our history to favour a particular people, the MORE WE BECOME CONFUSED AS A NATION and so it becomes virtually impossible to develop. Because the BLODD that was shed would have been in vain and the spirits will forever be roaming in our Cities. God Have Mercy. Selah
Hahahaha see someone too Nkrumah achievement is hurting you why prof Adei. You hurt to see other people achieved great things same you hurted former President Mahama WHY.
Academic dishonesty and ***barred word*** statement against a leader who selflessly fought for the independent of Ghana.Nkrumah died and left no physical asset of his own. A ***barred word*** 'professor' attempting to rewrite the history of Ghana.
This prof. is a typical old man who has become senile.
