Hundreds of members of the New-Tafo branch of Pentecost International Worship Centre, have come together to rid the entire community of filth as the Church embarked on a nationwide project to keep Ghana clean.
Sunday's exercise saw both young and old in the church join hands to desilt choked gutters, clear weeds and evacuate refuse within the New-Tafo community.
The exercise forms part of the church's contribution in complimenting government efforts towards improving sanitation.
Presiding Elder, Maxwell Owusu, said the mandate of the church is not to only preach about God, but to also encourage environmental safety.
He hinted of the Church's intention to provide dustbins in the community to reduce indiscriminate loitering.
"As the Holy book says cleanliness is next to Godliness so it is important we always maintain a clean environment in our homes, churches, and workplaces. By engaging in this exercise, we believe sanitation-related disease will reduce drastically," he stated.
Participants also took the opportunity to educate residents on the need to keep their environment clean to avoid diseases.
The Church of Pentecost, together with sanitation giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has launched a sanitation campaign drive to help keep the country clean.
The campaign themed “Environmental Care, My Responsibility” is aimed at rallying members of the Church of Pentecost and Zoomlion staff to improve the level of sanitation in the country.
Per the campaign, members of the Church and Zoomlion are to organize periodic clean-up exercises, hold seminars on sanitation and distribute waste bins, among activities in ensuring a clean environment.
The Church of Pentecost, according to its Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamkye, has over 2 million members nationwide.
Some civil society organizations have over the years criticized Christians who make up over 70% of Ghana’s population for contributing significantly to the level of filth in the country.
According to them, leaders of churches have failed to use their pulpits to sensitize church members on sanitation.
