The Ghana Education Service (GES) early this year, banned canning in primary and secondary schools.
The ban which affects both public and private schools in the country, according to a statement is aimed at promoting a safe and protective learning environment for children. According to them the caning often traumatizes the students.
Many parents have spoken against the ban because they claim without it, it is difficult to instill discipline in their children. Others also quote Proverbs 13:24 which says 'spare the rod and spoil the child'.
On Monday's edition of Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', renowned journalist, Kwami Sefa Kayi while interviewing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof Opoku Amankwa said he disagrees with the fact that caning students will cause trauma.
According to him, even though its overuse is bad, banning caning in its entirety can affect discipline in our schools.
