Greater Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has charged the Chief Executive Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, to improve his services of ensuring the region is clean or else face a tougher competition.
The Minister, in an interview on "Kokrokoo" on Peace FM, expressed his dissatisfaction with the work of Zoomlion.
He resented that the sanitation situation in the capital city has festered to an extent that the city is almost swallowed up by filth.
Hon. Henry Quartey disclosed that there is another waste management company whose presentation on how to keep the city clean is well-advanced and has caught his attention.
He recounted that the waste management company, whose name he withheld, has proposed a new technique to resolve the sanitation problem.
He, therefore, cautioned Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong and his company, Zoomlion, to up their game saying "if he jokes, I will give him competition in Accra. I want him to up his game with the issue of waste management and refuse collection in Accra".
"I am sending a caution to Zoomlion. If he doesn't up his game . . . I will give him competition in Accra. He should be told . . . because it's not about the company. It's about service to Ghana and I think that that service he should take it serious," Henry Quartey continued and pledged that "if he doesn't up his game, so long as I remain Regional Minister - Greater Accra - I will give him competition".
He also cautioned individuals to stop throwing refuse at inappropriate places and into the gutters, especially during rainfalls.

I fully agree with the honourable minister. The sanitation problem of Accra is becoming with passing day - Go to Central Accra, it is an eyesore. One cant significantly feel the impact of waste management company, Zoomlion. The state trains Environmental Health Inspectors at School of Hygienes across the country. What is their role now? Growing up there were Town Council, "Tankase" who would come to inspect our surroundings and would ensure they were clean otherwise you paid a fine or served summons. We need a more waste management than we are experiencing under monopolised Zoomlion.
Hon Quartey, your people in some of the assemly are pulling you down. Your warning to them aren't being taken seriously by your own team members; how do you think other business minded people will. Public toilet in some places e.g. Ablekuman-Oduman area are made to spill out in the open. A conccern issue that could lead to a cholera outbreak. Although, the Amasaman Assemly are aware of it they're failing to use their mandate/ authority to get the problem fixed--Operartion Clean Your ... environment isn't working...Sir, please take action, ensure your staff earn their salary or fire them before getting Zoomlion a competitor.
This one too is caused by the evil ndc
Kasawale. Apuuuu
He is joking already Sir, bring the competition in NOW!
Please don't give him any warning! Competition is very good. It brings out the best. The monopoly is not helping let others join the game and we will see the difference
If there is any minister in the current government who is at work, it's the Greater Accra regional minister .No wonder he initially rejected the offer by the president to be the regional minister but had to be persuaded, maybe the reason why he's bold. Currently all the MMDA's have a share of their common fund deducted at souce and payed to zoomlion every quarter, the amount is huge. But there are times on wonders why a uniform figure is deducted for metros, municipalities and districts. The population of the districts are not the same so they don't generate same amount of waste. Infact some of the districts are too rural such that the district capital itself cannot be described as a town. Why won't the government give the assemblies the freedom to decide who should manage their waste for them to enable bargain with the waste management company or companies. Currently no assembly has control over common fund deductions at source. Hon minister for Accra, well said but you can't, the powers above you will tell you are venturing into a no go area. People are making millions from these deals so they won't allow you to pour sand into their gari, no it won't happen. So do what you can and stop doing what you cannot. That's Ghana for you.
Maybe the words did not come out right but it is not the Regional Ministers job to give an existing company Competition. No! Zoom Lion is not doing a good job. Warn ZoomLion formally and better still base it on a survey of customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction- and don’t make it sound like personal competition. (Maybe it’s the English brofo). I live in East Legon on Boundary Road, and not happy at all with their service!
How I wish you can up your game too by being a man of your word....but the government nd evil forces won't allow you. Keep up the good work boss God bless u nd your household for just this little initiative
