The Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea has called for a national effort by all Ghanaians to provide relief support to the victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.
Nana Akomea, addresssing the issue during Peace FM's morning show "Kokrokoo", asked that government launch a national appeal for every Ghanaian to contribute a quota to help the victims.
At least 26,000 people living along the lower Volta Basin have been displaced with their houses and many other properties submerged by the spillage.
To Nana Akomea, although President Nana Addo has pledged government's full support to the victims, it cannot take up the challenge alone.
"It has to be a national effort; everybody contributes something small. It is not their fault that this disaster has happened to them. Unfortunately, the country hasn't got all the resources...So, it's a huge national effort. We should appeal for international assistance," he appealed.
He implored all Ghanaians to assist the government noting the victims are equally "Ghanaians. It could be you tomorrow".
"We should launch a national appeal. Many many Ghanaians would contribute to it" to help remedy the situation, he stressed.

We are behaving as if God did not give us brains .
"International assistance" ampa! This NPP government leaves no stone unturned. Very soon they will blame Israel - Palestinian conflict for the cause of Ghana's problems including the uncontrolled galamsay and man made disasters. Now they are quickly going to amass more wealth from international and local donations intended for the flood victims just as they did with the COVID donations. As if that is not enough, they will introduce another "nuisance" tax namely, "Flood relief tax", which will be billed across every inwards and outwards tax regimes including public and private commercial toilet facilities. A government that has never put in contingency plans to anything, in fact they're unaware or rather they care less about the impact of such negligences and deliberate destruction of our environment through galamsay and illegal forestry activities and poor sanitation practices. What a good riddance it will be to see any of the members of this government who see nothing wrong with it to soon leave power and never return again.
This is what we get when we consistently love like there's no tomorrow. Leaders are so entangled in the web of greed, pettiness and short sightedness. Nobody considers tomorrow as long as they're grabbing the resources of the country for their personal benefit. How on earth should VRA and all other stakeholders continue to use the "overflow and spillage" method in this age? How come they haven't looked at the sustainable ways of handling the dam to avoid these needles disasters? But again, it's the same character of a people, when they're are doing galamsay, they don't think about tomorrow and the consequences of their actions. And we have leaders old enough to be able to think about these, yet it's always just emptiness and lip service.
Nana Akomeah, this disaster is limited to a few communities taking the whole of the Volta and eastern regions into account and this too we can handle it but call for international support? Abaaa, 66 years as an independent country with all the resources at our disposal i.e. Gold, bauxite, manganese, diamond, cocoa, timber, 2 giant harbours generating revenue together with crude oil we can't Marshall funds from these resources to tackle this disaster which is limited to a few communities but want the international community to come in? I know people will be willing to contribute but the call should not be coming from so called politicians in Ghana. The religious heads should take the issue up i.e. Catholic bishops conference, the national chief imam and the head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim mission, bet me donations will pour in thousands. A call from any so called politician rather angers people because the confidence and trust level of the people for so called politicians in Ghana is near zero. Let Osman Nuhu Sharbutu and the Ameer of Ahmadiyya Bin Salih and president of the catholic bishops call for support and see the response .
Let those who were advocating for coup d'état in Ghana take a clue. You don't appreciate your peace, until you have lost it!
