The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has indicated that his office has submitted a draft review of the National Urban Policy to the Cabinet.
The aim is to enhance access to urban infrastructure and services to align with current trends, in line with SDG Goal 11.
According to him, the revised draft of the National Urban Policy includes a strategy focusing on urban mobility and accessibility, aimed at improving governance and financing in these areas.
Speaking during an interview with Peace FM News at the Urban Mobility Forum, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah explained that his office has been implementing the Ghana Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (GUMAP) over the past eight years.
This project, he says, is funded with a $6 million grant from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, and it seeks to enhance urban mobility and accessibility in six Greater Accra Metropolitan and Municipal Areas.
He emphasized the importance of urban mobility in driving socioeconomic development and stressed the need for stakeholders to prioritize policy dialogues on these critical issues.
The project components focus on Urban Mobility Planning, Public Transport Regulations, Traffic Planning and Management, Investment Measures, and a new Master's Program at KNUST in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland These efforts are aimed at achieving the overarching project objective of improving urban mobility and accessibility in Greater Accra Metropolitan and Municipal areas.
Addressing the forum, the Greater Accra Regional Minister highlighted congestion, sanitation, and mobility as the primary challenges facing the capital.
He assured the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development of the proactive stance of all Assemblies within the region in promptly addressing mobility issues.
