The Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, Right Reverend Dr Edem Tettey, has appealed to church leaders, especially pastors, not to rebel against the authority that God used to ordain them.
He said pastors needed to emulate Christ Jesus, who is their perfect example in ministry, adding, “Jesus made it clear that he came not to do his own will but that of the Father who sent him.”
“We humble ourselves to get ordained and after that we rebel in our minds and hearts against the authority that God used to ordain us. We enter the ministry because we can preach or because we have personal sets of agenda,” he stated.
Rt Rev. Tettey made the appeal when he addressed an Impartation Session of the Pastors and Spouses’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2015 of the Global Evangelical Church in Ho in the Volta Region.
It was on the theme: “Christ our perfect example in ministry” and was attended by over 200 pastors and their spouses.
The moderator said a summary of the life of Jesus Christ, according to Philippians 2:5-9, was humility and obedience to God from the time he left heaven to the time he finished his assignment.
He noted that some pastors were now in ministry either to please themselves or God in heaven, adding, “if a man will make the most impact in ministry, he must have the mind of Christ.”
Rt Rev. Tettey reminded the audience that authority was a basic principle in God's kingdom and that it was because Jesus was obedient to God that he became the source of salvation to those who obeyed him. He added that it was because Jesus had been given all authority that he could authorise and commission his disciples to raise other disciples who would raise others.
He lamented that although the Holy Spirit in Romans 13 stressed the need for submission to authority, “we seem to have set that aside in ministry”.
In a related development, the Pastors and Spouses Association of the Global Evangelical Church at its 2015 (AGM) elected a new set of executive to steer its affairs for the next three years.
The newly elected president, Rev. S. K. Sovor, on behalf of the executive, expressed gratitude to their colleagues for the opportunity given to them to serve and also for the confidence reposed in them.
