Mr. Robert Coleman, Communications Manager of Zoomlion, says in spite of the fact that several people have been deployed to ensure a clean Accra, the desired impact has not been achieved because of the lawless and irresponsible attitude adopted by some Ghanaians.

He has thus called for an attitudinal change if the country is to achieve the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goal (MDG7) on Environmental Sustainability by the year 2015.

Robert Coleman was particularly unhappy the country's drains are now being used as waste receptacles and bemoaned the penchant to indiscriminately dump waste material in culverts when it is raining.

"...they dispose of rubbish into drainage systems especially when it is raining thinking that the rain will sweep away the refuse and it will automatically vanish into thin air; but that is not the case...We have deployed many people who clean every part of Accra; but how come we are not making the progress that we desire?...It is just because people are lawless and have adopted an irresponsible attitude and that is why we have this problem on our hands. When it is raining, that is when people dump rubbish into drains with the view that the water will wash it away. The drains are now being used as waste receptacle and they do this with impunity,” he told Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on PeaceFM's "Kokrokoo Morning Show.

He was convinced that the only way the issue of environmental sanitation can be solved in the country is through repeated education.

“It is a major problem we have and that is why we have decided to intensify our educational efforts for people to realize that environmental sanitation management is a shared responsibility; with that we will make progress… One of the things we say in our national pledge is that we promise on our honour to be faithful and loyal to Ghana our motherland. The question is, are we being loyal, are we being faithful to Ghana our motherland when it comes to environmental sanitation?” Mr Coleman queried.
