The Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Ing. Owura K. Sarfo has asked Engineers in the country to rise and build the nation.
The affable CEO of MiDA made this call when he delivered his keynote address as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2nd Edition of the Engineering Excellence Awards held at the Auditorium of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra on Saturday, 31st October, 2015.
Speaking on the theme: “Engineers, rise up and reconstruct the nation”, Ing. Sarfo appealed to Engineers in the country to take active role and interest in the developmental projects that are on-going in the country to ensure they are of quality and sustainable now and can stand the test of time.
The President of Ghana Institution of Engineers, Ing. Kwaku Boampong in his welcome address said that the global engineering profession has recognized the reality of shrinking resources, the desire for sustainable practices & design and the need for social equity in the consumption of resources.
Quoting John Rusking, a philosopher, Ing. Boampong said: “When we build, let it not be for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for”. The need for us to be innovative in the planning and design of our infrastructure for sustainable and resilient environment can therefore not be over-emphasized”.
Ing. Boampong added that in order to accomplish the objective of attracting youngsters to science and engineering, this year’s awards recognized second cycle institutions for innovation.
The Chairman of Research and Awards Committee of GhIE, Ing. Joseph Oddei explained the categories of the awards which include Research category; Students caterogy, Young Engineers, Public as well as Projects, which is made up of Engineering design, Engineering Business Management and Implementation solutions awards.
In all, seven awards were up for grab. Master Ntiamoah Boadu Kwasi, a graduate with a BSc. Geological Engineering degree from uMat, won the Student Category (Tertiary) award. The Second Cycle School award went to Felix Jasmine Wilson from the Manheam SDA Basic School (MASDA), Tema New Town.
The Public Award Category was won by Ing. John Ahene Tettey, Director of Works, at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing.
Ing. Isaac Kirk Koffi, the Chief Executive Officer of VRA won the Engineering Business Management Award. In the same category, Ing.
Michael Krakue, the Chairman of ADK Consortium in Ghana was given an award in the Engineering Business Management award for demonstrating engineering excellence in leadership achievement, planning and organization.
Ing. Peter Gyane Gyima won the Implementation of Engineering Solutions award; whilst Bue Power Authority & SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited of China received the Implementation of Engineering Solutions award for demonstrating engineering excellence in achieving the original intent, local content participation, efficient use of resources and impact on society.
