A total of 6,555 dogs were counted in Dormaa Municipality in the recent pet census carried out by the Ghana Health Service.
The census run concurrently with the national immunization exercise on polio and Vitamin A supplementation for children under five years.
Mr. Jones Anim, municipal disease control officer who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the exercise was successful as pet owners were very co-operative.
He said a total of 4,489 domestic cats were also counted and explained the exercise was for data collection and the control of rabies in the municipality.
The disease control officer advised prospective pet owners to endeavour to register all new cats and dogs brought into the municipality.
