The Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, has apportioned some blame on estate developers for most of our water problems due to their illegal activities.

Speaking exclusively to Peace FM in an interview on “Kokrokoo”, she said most estate developers interrupt and eventually stop water supply to many homes and communities, because of greed.

He said, there were instances where these developers cut water pipe lines, disrupting the supply of water to many homes. He told Peace FM that activities of such estate developers were a big concern and worry to the Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL), costing the Water Ministry huge sums of money.

She said illegal connections made by developers were also a source of worry. However, she said the ministry would be closing down some hydrants to increase pressure on its main water pumps and thereby increase the rate at which the pumps, pump water.

Meanwhile she says the GWCL produces between 70 and 80 million gallons of water, as against the daily need of about 150milion gallons needed in Accra alone. He told Kwami Sefa Kayi, host of “Kokrokoo” programme that the closure of the hydrants had contributed to the increase in water supply.

But she says the hydrants of the Ghana National Fire Service have not been closed down due to the rate at which their services were needed in times of fire outbreak.

She added that Ghanaians should be blamed in certain instances as they always complain about measures being taken by the government to straighten things. She told Peace FM that Ghanaians will give you all kinds of names, and people will ask for a human face, whenever the government decides to take action to decongest or pull down structures, for efficient flow of water.

Nevertheless, she said the government had signed a contract for expansion of its facilities to boost water supply. She added that this year, the government will drill about 2,000 boreholes to supplement the existing once to boost water supply.
